Dental Health – What Causes Tooth Discoloration and How to Prevent it
One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. However, tooth discoloration is a common problem and it’s natural to look for the ways to avoid it. Luckily, there are many solutions which can help you to bring back that gleaming white, healthy smile. Here are some ways to avoid common causes of tooth discoloration and several tips on how to whiten yellow teeth!
There are many causes of tooth discoloration, but smoking, some drinks, certain foods and natural aging process are the most common ones. Although coffee and red wine are the main suspects, the other drinks with high acidity, such as sports drinks, juices and soda can cause staining on the teeth. When it comes to foods, stay away from colored popsicles and candies, but keep in mind that even super-healthy foods such as berries can cause staining problems over time, too. So, I’m not suggesting giving up your morning coffee (which is certainly something I’ll never do, either), but reducing the intake of the above mentioned drinks and foods won’t hurt you. Furthermore, it’s good to drink water immediately after eating or drinking “staining” foods. It’s easy step that can drastically help clear away staining or the acids. A proper dental hygiene is a must, for many reasons, but it’s also the way to avoid or at least slow down the tooth discoloration process. Regular dental checkups, proper brushing and flossing are great habits and if you develop them early, you are less likely to have dental issues in general.
But, even if you do everything mentioned above, your teeth will become less over time. So, it’s good to know how to whiten yellow teeth. Professional teeth whitening procedures can be done at the dentist’s office and, if you choose this method, make sure you do it approximately twice a year. Also, there are many “home remedies”, such as whitening toothpaste, mouthwash, trays, strips and pens. If you choose to whiten your teeth on your own, make sure you double check the ingredients of the product you will use, since sometimes they can do more harm than good.
