U.S. Department of Agriculture says that one drink is equal to 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer and 1 and half ounces of hard liquors.

Heavy alcohol consumption can harm liver, resulting in cirrhosis, a life threatening disease. Too much alcohol intake can also increase blood pressure, damage your heart and is connected to many types of cancers, including prostate, breast, esophagus, mouth and colorectal cancers. These risks are even more for people who also smoke along with drinking.

More than 16,000 people die every year in accidents because of drunken driving, according to National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
