While there are numerous dental problems, the commonest is plaque. No human can claim that her/his teeth are free from plaque. We cannot leave without eating, and so, our teeth cannot be without plaque, as plaque forms from what we eat. However, it is possible to get rid of plaque before it turns to its harder version (which is impossible to remove at home) called tartar. Even we can remove plaque at home with some easy methods. Here are 4 of them.
1. Tomatoes and Strawberries
As you know both these fruits are storehouses of vitamin C which in turn is the best for gums. You can rub these fruits straight on your teeth and leave for 5 minutes. This loosens the plaque. Next, rinse your mouth with a mixture of warm water and baking soda. This will make your teeth crystal clean. Tomatoes and strawberries can also be replaced with other vitamin C-rich foods such as berries, papaya, lemons, oranges and lime etc.
2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is the commonest and most effective tool for removing plaque. You just have to take some baking soda in a small plate and dip your wet toothbrush in it and brush teeth with it. To make it even more effective, you can also add a pinch of salt to it.
Make a homemade mouthwash by mixing half cup of baking soda, 1 cup of water, 4 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin, 10 drops of essential lemon oil and 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Store the mixture in a bottle and use once or twice in a day.
3. Cheese
An aged cheese such as Cheddar or Swiss cheese if eaten before meals can neutralize the acids that influence the production of plaque. The more aged the cheese, the better it works. There is an ingredient in the aged cheese that acts as a buffering agent. It has been suggested by the Student Care Center in the University of Chicago that eating raw peanuts gives the same effect, neutralizing the acids and re-mineralizing the teeth.
4. Food Colors
Food colors are of great help to remove plaque at home. Before starting the cleaning, take care to dab a bit of petroleum jelly on to your lips so as to keep them away from staining. Then mix 1-2 drops of food color into a teaspoon of water and whoosh around your mouth. Throw out of mouth and wash the mouth with clear water. Remove colored areas with your toothbrush.
