How to Know if You are Overweight?

Getting a few pounds added to your weight in a year may not look like a big deal. But if you don’t try to lose them, there is a high possibility that they go on adding each year, even each six months or each month. It’s not always the case that fat people are unhealthy and even slimmer people are at risk of obesity-related diseases like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. There are two numbers that tell if your weight will cause a health problem to you or not. These are:

1. BMI (Body Mass Index)

BMI or Body Mass Index is the indicator of fat and is obtained by measuring your weight in relation to your height. Its formula is:

BMI = kg/m2

This means that you have to divide your body weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. From this number, you can know if you are normal, overweight or obese with the following figures:

  • BMI 18.5 to 24.9 – Normal weight
  • BMI 25 to 29.9 – Overweight
  • BMI 30 or more – Obese

2. Waist-to-hip Ratio

This is a simple yet effective tool to determine whether you are at risk because of your weight. This is because the distribution of fat in your body decides whether you will get heart disease, i.e. if there is more fat around your waist than that around your hips, you are at high risk of getting a heart attack, while if you have more fat around your hips than around your waist, you are at low risk. You can tell from your waist-to-hip ratio whether you are at normal weight, overweight or obese:

  • Normal Weight: For women < 0.80; For men < 0.90
  • Overweight: For women 0.80 to 0.84; For men 0.90 to 0.99
  • Obese: For women > 0.85; For men: > 1.00

Why Diseases like Diabetes and Heart Disease Linked to Being Overweight?

Diabetes: More than 80% of diabetic people are overweight or obese. It’s not clear yet why it is so. It may be because excess weight brings about changes in cells and make them resistant to insulin. Function of insulin is to carry sugar from blood to cells where it is utilized for getting energy. When cells become insulin resistant, they don’t take up the blood sugar because of which sugar remains in the blood. This increases the workload on cells that produce insulin to maintain blood sugar to a normal level. So, they fail due to over-working.

High Blood Pressure: Having a large body mass needs more blood; so, to meet these increased need, heart pumps out more blood and this increases blood pressure.

Heart Disease: Due to excess workload for meeting the demand of blood to increased body mass, heart eventually fails.

How can Weight Loss Help?

In all these conditions, losing weight is a surefire solution because when your fat reduces, it brings your cells to their normal state, thereby increasing their ability to take up sugar. Your heart too doesn’t need to supply blood to a large body mass; so, high blood pressure and heart disease too are controlled.

All in all, you should reduce your weight to stay away from these dangerous diseases. Act upon the weight loss tips given at Get Healthy With Weight Loss, exercise, take the help of your doctor and head towards a healthy life!
