Hypnotherapy or hypnosis is actually a technique through which you can make others’ minds mold in anyway. If you hypnotize a person and give him a mental suggestion that “you are a dog”, he will behave like a dog after waking up. This is the power of our unconscious mind. Whatever it receives, it makes us believe that it is actually happening, though it may not be true. Based on this power of our unconscious mind, hypnotherapy emerged. Through hypnotherapy, the tremendous power of our unconscious mind can be used for curing diseases.
How Does Hypnotherapy Work?
Remember the experiment of concentrating sun’s rays through a convex lens on a paper and burning it? When sun’s rays fall on us, they don’t burn us. But if they come together and fall on us, their united power can burn us. Our unconscious mind too has a power that has been dispersed in innumerable weak thoughts. If it is concentrated, it can make things true or at least make feel like true. This principle is used in hypnotherapy and patient’s mind is concentrated on a positive thought of getting well. The effectiveness of this therapy depends on the competence of the hypnotist and the patient’s trust.
Hypnotherapy works in another way too. It works by putting the patient into the deepest sleep and trying to find what is there deep in her/his mind. That can be the cause of some mental problem.
A Surefire Way to Treat Mental Illnesses
Hypnotherapy can become a surefire cure for all types of mental illnesses if the patient is ready to undergo it. Problem here can be people are afraid of going under hypnosis. Especially women may feel unsafe if the hypnotist is a male. However, if both, the hypnotherapist and the patient are ready for the session, hypnosis can work wonders in all types of mental illnesses, like:
- Phobias
- Manias
- Stress
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Post-trauma anxiety
- Addictions
Physically, hypnosis can be used to treat conditions like pain. If powerful suggestions are given to patient’s mind that s/he is getting cure of the condition and slowly s/he will be completely cured, s/he would indeed feel better after some days.
Drawbacks
- It’s rare to find a combination of a perfect hypnosis and a perfect patient ready to get hypnotized.
- Works mostly only in mental problems. Physical problems where medication and surgery is needed, hypnosis cannot work. On the contrary, it will make patient “feel” that s/he has got cured and s/he won’t get proper treatment, and eventually her/his condition may worsen. Hypnosis may make miracles if a deep state of hypnosis is achieved. But such cases are very rare, almost equal to none.
- Unconscious mind believes in whatever it gets suggestions about. It’s like a computer which doesn’t think using its own brain. Therefore if some wrong suggestion is given unintentionally by the therapist, it may work adversely on the patient. Of course, this can be reversed by again putting the patient into hypnosis. But that makes an unnecessary mess.
